Steinway Lyngdorf Home Cinema Case Study

This bespoke home cinema installation in Bath was designed and delivered by Hidden Home Technology as a professional-grade cinema and creative workspace for film and television production. At its core is a Dolby Atmos Steinway Lyngdorf surround sound system, engineered to deliver reference-level performance with exceptional clarity, control, and realism.

The project formed part of a full interior renovation, allowing acoustic performance, lighting, layout, and finishes to be considered as a single, cohesive design. We made a strong emphasis on aesthetics and material quality, resulting in a refined, comfortable environment that supports critical professional work while remaining equally suited to relaxed family viewing. The finished space balances technical precision with elegant interior design, creating a cinema room that performs as impressively as it looks

Hidden Home Technology was initially invited to extend high-speed internet connectivity and data infrastructure throughout the property. During this visit, we were shown an existing cinema room located in the basement of a separate building. Although the room already featured quality AV equipment, it quickly became apparent that the space had the potential to be transformed into a reference-level home cinema, suitable both as a professional workspace and a family entertainment room.

As an authorised and registeredSteinway Lyngdorf dealer, we were perfectly positioned to design and deliver a cinema that aligned with the client’s expectations for accuracy, realism, and performance.

The Original Home Cinema

The existing cinema featured an Epson projector and a Steinway Lyngdorf surround sound system, including Steinway amplifiers, processors, loudspeakers, and subwoofers. While the system itself was high quality, the room was not optimised to allow it to perform at its full potential.

The projection screen was relatively small, constrained by speaker placement on the front wall. The room had no specialist acoustic treatment, resulting in excessive reflections and room-induced colouration of the sound. Visually, the space felt dark and dated, with minimal lighting and an old, thin carpet. As a result, the room was underused and did not feel like a destination space within the home.

Design Objectives and Concept

The owner already appreciated the importance of high-quality audio and video reproduction. However, the existing cinema space in his home was no longer serving either his professional needs or his family’s lifestyle. So the brief for this Midford cinema renovation focused on three core objectives:

  • Accurate sound reproduction using Steinway Lyngdorf technology and advanced acoustic treatment

  • Improved visual impact, including a significantly larger projection screen

  • A refined interior design, creating a lighter, more inviting, yet cinematic environment

By addressing acoustics, aesthetics, and technology as a single, integrated design, we were able to dramatically elevate the performance and usability of the space.

Front Wall Reconstruction and Screen Upgrade

To resolve the limitations of the original layout, we designed and constructed a new timber-framed front wall. This allowed us to:

  • Install substantial acoustic treatment behind the screen

  • Mount a much larger acoustically transparent projection screen

  • Reposition the Steinway Lyngdorf front speakers behind the screen

  • Raise speaker height to better align with the main listening position

This approach not only improved dialogue clarity and soundstage accuracy but also delivered a far more immersive cinematic experience.

Acoustic Treatment and Construction

It took us approximately 8 weeks to complete this home cinema installation in Bath. During this time, three of the four side walls were rebuilt using new timber frames to provide the depth required for professional acoustic treatment. Although this marginally reduced the room’s size, the improvement in sound quality and aesthetics far outweighed the loss of space.

Our acoustic strategy focused on reducing reflections, controlling bass energy, and minimising the room’s influence on playback. The newly constructed front wall effectively acts as a large bass trap, with additional treatment placed throughout the room to ensure balanced performance across all frequencies.

Interior Design, Materials, and Finishes

To complement the technical upgrades, the cinema was fully redesigned internally. We installed Timorous Beasties fabric wall panels, carefully positioned symmetrically to act as both acoustic absorbers and visual artwork. We highlighted the panels with designer wall-mounted art lights, adding depth and texture to the space.

Our signature polished black Valchromat inlay and skirting detail was installed at floor level to frame the new timber walls. The existing carpet was replaced with a lighter, thicker plush carpet and underlay, improving comfort while also contributing additional acoustic absorption.

We designed the colour pallete around retained furniture, including a dark purple-blue reclining sofa, the ceiling and rear joinery units, which provide shelving for books, ornaments, and media, were repainted and refreshed to better integrate with the new design.

Lighting Design and Control

We completely redesigned the Lighting as part of the renovation. The original exposed LED strips were replaced with dim-to-warm LED lighting, complete with diffusers and timber guards to eliminate glare.

At lower brightness levels, the lighting produces a warm amber glow, creating an intimate cinema atmosphere. All lighting is controlled via an upgraded Rako lighting system, with additional circuits, dimmers, and drivers added.

Multiple lighting scenes were programmed, including:

  • Entry and socialising mode

  • Casual TV viewing

  • Full cinema mode with minimal reflections

This level of control allows the room to adapt seamlessly to different uses.

Steinway Lyngdorf Audio System and Control

The cinema features a complete Steinway Lyngdorf audio system, including Steinway Lyngdor loudspeakers, processors, subwoofers and RoomPerfect™ room correction technology.

As an authorised Steinway Lyngdorf dealer, we re-installed, configured, and calibrated the entire system to manufacturer standards.

We integrated the entire AV system using URC Total Control Accelerator, allowing all devices to be controlled from a single interface via remote, tablet, or smartphone. Apple TV, Sky, Sonos audio, projection, and lighting are all unified into one intuitive control system.

Calibration and Performance Tuning

Following installation, we took detailed acoustic measurements using REW software and the Steinway Lyngdorf calibration microphone. Even before applying RoomPerfect™, the room exhibited a dramatic improvement in clarity, cohesion, and bass control.

The diagonally opposed subwoofers were carefully tuned, and RoomPerfect™ was applied to make final refinements.

Overall, we, the client and their family were astonished by the final result.  A much more highly accurate, immersive soundstage that closely reflected professional studio monitoring environments.

The Result

This home cinema installation in Bath has transformed a dark, underused room into a reference-level Steinway Lyngdorf cinema and professional workspace. The client and his family now use the cinema daily, and it has become a focal point for both work and entertainment.

This project demonstrates how expert acoustic and bespoke interior design alongside a Steinway Lyngdorf audio system, and can combine to deliver a truly exceptional home cinema experience.
