Overview

The NSC 222 is an easy-to-use streaming preamplifier from Naim, and the heart of the company’s New Classic system. It brings streamed music and radio together with vinyl and headphone listening in a single, high-precision unit, built to Naim’s exclusive British design at the company’s Salisbury home, and engineered for true high-fidelity performance with the characteristic Naim sound.

Design & build

The NSC 222 wears the crisp, restrained New Classic aesthetic, with a 5.5-inch colour display presenting artwork and track information on the front panel. Control is by the Focal & Naim app and a supplied Zigbee smart remote whose bi-directional link does not depend on line of sight—volume changes are mirrored on the handset as well as the display, so it can be used comfortably from anywhere in the room.

Sound & performance

At the core is a Statement-derived volume control that uses reed relays and a discrete-resistor stage for precise channel balance and the sound quality of fixed-resistor attenuation. A fly-by-wire optical encoder on a precision bearing gives a smooth, silent 100-step action. The result combines convenience with genuine performance, handling analogue and digital sources with equal composure.

The NSC 222 includes a built-in moving-magnet phono stage for turntables, alongside analogue inputs on DIN and RCA and a headphone output derived from the Uniti Atom Headphone Edition. Digital inputs comprise two optical, one coaxial and front and rear USB. It plays from Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, UPnP servers and internet radio, and is Roon Ready.

Technology

Streaming is handled by Naim’s latest NP800 card, which routes digital audio over low-voltage differential signalling for low noise, supporting high-resolution formats up to 32-bit/384kHz with gapless playback. The design is engineered for a low noise floor throughout, and can be taken further still with the external NPX 300 power supply, which disables the internal supply to reduce noise and provide cleaner power.
