Description
Overview
The Mingus Quintet 2 is a three-way, bass-reflex floorstanding loudspeaker from Marten, the Swedish high-end maker. It brings together a pure diamond tweeter, a ceramic midrange and a trio of sandwich-cone bass drivers in a design built around Marten’s belief in first-order crossovers and time-coherent behaviour.
Design & build
Marten builds the Mingus Quintet 2 in Sweden to reference standards. It is a substantial three-way floorstander, with the driver complement chosen for the intrinsic stiffness and low resonance of their materials — diamond and ceramic at the top, aluminium-sandwich honeycomb for the bass — and a first-order crossover network designed to preserve the integrity of the signal.
Sound & performance
The Quintet 2 offers wide bandwidth and coherence: quoted frequency response is 24Hz–100kHz (±2dB), with sensitivity of 88dB, a 6-ohm nominal impedance and 300W power handling. The combination of rigid driver materials and a first-order crossover is aimed at a fast, transparent and phase-accurate presentation with genuine low-end extension.
Key features
The driver array comprises a 0.75-inch pure diamond tweeter, a 5-inch ceramic midrange and three 7-inch aluminium sandwich honeycomb bass drivers. The crossover is first-order, set at 370Hz and 4,000Hz — a gentle 6dB-per-octave design chosen for its time and phase coherence.
Technology
Marten uses a Cell diamond tweeter from Accuton, exploiting diamond’s exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio and high internal sound velocity for low distortion at the frequency extremes. The ceramic midrange dome, made by a refined electrochemical process, combines light weight with high rigidity and a high material resonance frequency, keeping distortion low. The first-order crossover ties the drivers together with minimal phase disturbance.
