Overview

The MC901 is one of the most ambitious amplifiers McIntosh has built for the home. It is a monoblock designed to drive a single loudspeaker, but with a difference: it combines a 300-watt vacuum-tube amplifier and a 600-watt solid-state amplifier on one unified chassis, so a single unit bi-amps one speaker. It draws on decades of McIntosh expertise in both valve and solid-state amplification.

Design & build

Visually the MC901 is unmistakably McIntosh: a black glass front panel with an illuminated logo, the DualView output meter, a polished stainless-steel chassis and aluminium detailing, with glass-printed circuit diagrams on the top panel. It is a substantial component, weighing 180 pounds (81.6kg) and measuring 44.5 × 34 × 75 cm, and one MC901 is required per loudspeaker.

Sound & performance

McIntosh Hybrid Drive technology assigns each amplifier section to the frequencies it handles best. The 300-watt valve section powers the midrange and high-frequency drivers, preserving harmonic richness and spatial realism, while the 600-watt solid-state section drives the power-hungry woofers with authority. Removing the low-frequency demand from the valves lets them operate in their optimal range, improving efficiency and musical performance.

Technology

An internal adjustable crossover, with controls on the top panel and gain adjustment, matches the amplifier to the loudspeaker, and direct inputs allow it to be bypassed. The DualView Power Output Meter stacks two mechanical meters in one window, one per section. Comprehensive protection includes Power Guard against clipping, the Power Guard Screen Grid Sensor safeguarding the KT88 tubes, and fuse-less Sentry Monitor short-circuit protection.
