All critical parameters, including tracking force, anti-skate, cartridge overhang and arm height, are factory set to ensure optimal performance straight out of the box.

Supplied as standard is the Sumiko Amethyst high-output moving magnet cartridge, a next-generation design that delivers remarkable resolution and refinement. Featuring a nude line-contact diamond stylus, the Amethyst traces groove modulations with exceptional accuracy, accessing musical information often associated with high-end moving coil designs. The wider view: McIntosh MT5 reviews in brief

McIntosh built the MT5 with help from Clearaudio. Its acrylic platter turns on a magnetic bearing with a ceramic shaft and is driven by belt from a Swiss-made DC motor. It plays at 33, 45 or 78 rpm, chosen from the front panel. The arm arrives fitted and set up at the factory, so the deck is close to plug and play. In true McIntosh fashion the platter glows when it is switched on.

Both reviews date from 2017, when the MT5 came with a Sumiko Blue Point No.2 moving-coil cartridge. Today it is supplied with the Sumiko Amethyst, a moving-magnet design, so what they say of the sound describes the deck with its earlier partner. What Hi-Fi? gave it four stars in January 2017 and found it fast, agile and full of punch, with plenty of detail and a refined top end. It could think of no high-end rival as easy to set up and called it “a truly capable unit that can stand up to any class rival without embarrassment”.

Paul Rigby reviewed it for The Audiophile Man in December 2017 and admired the turntable while faulting the cartridge it then came with. With the Blue Point fitted he heard a strong, bold sound with hefty bass and too little zip. When he fitted a more ambitious cartridge the deck was transformed, with new space and energy. He urged buyers to choose the cartridge with care. What Hi-Fi? had also suspected that a better cartridge would help it untangle dense music, and found its soundstage shrink a little when things grew complex.
