Overview

The NDX 2 is Naim‘s reference network streamer, developed with performance as the first priority. It streams wirelessly or over a network from almost any source and adds a full complement of digital inputs, so it can also serve as a network-attached DAC for other components. Alongside Naim’s bespoke streaming platform and an upgraded converter stage, it stands among the most capable streamers at its level.

Design & build

The NDX 2 follows Naim’s established design language, with a 5.5-inch colour display presenting album artwork and track information. It is supplied with a Zigbee remote and the usual careful array of connections and antennae, and is engineered inside for a low noise floor throughout—the groundwork for the performance Naim intends the streamer to deliver.

Sound & performance

Performance was the central aim of the NDX 2’s development. A bespoke streaming platform, an upgraded DAC and discrete analogue stages combine for an immersive, lively presentation with the drive and timing for which Naim is known. It is a source designed to reveal recordings rather than smooth them over, and to hold its own in a genuinely high-end system.

Key features

The NDX 2 plays from Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Bluetooth (aptX HD), with high-resolution UPnP streaming, internet radio and multi-room support. Digital inputs comprise two optical, one coaxial RCA, one coaxial BNC and front and rear USB, so external sources can take advantage of the converter stage. It is Roon Ready and controlled through the Naim app.

Technology

Conversion is by a Burr-Brown PCM1792A DAC, but Naim implements its own custom digital filters and a discrete current-to-voltage stage immediately after it, handling in its own electronics work usually left to the chip. A SHARC DSP integer-oversamples incoming audio to 40-bit accuracy before conversion, and the streaming card routes digital audio over low-voltage differential signalling for low noise.
