Overview

The ND5 XS 2 is Naim‘s entry-level network player and a natural introduction to music streaming for anyone building a Naim system. It uses the same streaming platform as the company’s higher models, with an expanded feature set, and is an ideal partner for a Naim integrated amplifier or a quality amplifier of the owner’s choosing.

Design & build

The ND5 XS 2 uses Naim’s slim XS chassis, with the machined casework and understated presentation the brand is known for. Inside, classic Naim engineering — an oversized toroidal transformer and decoupled circuit boards — reflects the company’s attention to detail. It is designed to sit as a tidy, capable source at the heart of a considered system.

Sound & performance

The ND5 XS 2 aims for natural, engaging sound from all sources. It contains its own digital-to-analogue processing built around a Burr-Brown PCM1791A converter, with the data integer-oversampled in a SHARC DSP to high accuracy before conversion. Carefully selected and matched parts and a substantial power supply support the composed, musical character.

Streaming covers high-resolution UPnP, AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Roon compatibility, internet radio and multiroom. Physical inputs include Ethernet, USB and four S/PDIF (one BNC, one RCA and two optical), for connecting conventional digital sources alongside network playback. Over-the-air updates are delivered through the Naim app.

Technology

Resolution support depends on input: streaming and USB handle PCM to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD to DSD128; the BNC and RCA coaxial inputs handle PCM to 24-bit/192kHz and DSD over PCM to DSD64; the optical inputs handle PCM to 24-bit/96kHz. Supported formats include WAV, FLAC, AIFF, ALAC, AAC, MP3, OGG, WMA and DSD, and the player can fill up to six rooms with multiroom streaming.
