The Minima Amator II is Sonus Faber‘s compact two-way bookshelf loudspeaker, a second-generation reworking of the Minima Amator first launched in 1992. It retains the original’s dimensions and choice of materials while adopting an entirely new electroacoustic design, aimed at the listener who wants the intimacy and craftsmanship of a small Sonus Faber in a modern, refined package.

Design & build

The cabinet is made from compact, solid walnut, with fine Italian leather covering the front baffle and a thin brass insert at the base. The rear panel is also leather-covered and carries brass binding posts, alongside the exit of the reflex port. It is a small speaker built to the standard of a much larger one, and it is designed to be used on a bookshelf, a credenza or a dedicated stand.

Sound & performance

As a two-way reflex design the Minima Amator II divides its work between a single mid-woofer and a dome tweeter, giving the natural, unforced voicing for which Sonus Faber is known. Quoted frequency response is 50Hz–35kHz, with a sensitivity of 87dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms — a speaker that rewards careful, quality amplification rather than sheer power.

The driver complement is a 28mm (1.1-inch) DAD silk-dome tweeter and a 150mm (6-inch) mid-woofer, both developed in the company’s Vicenza laboratory. The crossover divides at 2,500Hz. Technology

The tweeter uses Sonus Faber’s DAD (Damped Apex Dome) principle: a frame over the dome controls its movement at the most sensitive point and acts as a form of phase-correcting device, reducing resonance and smoothing the high-frequency response. Combined with the reflex-loaded mid-woofer, it gives the small cabinet its composed, coherent character.
