The Kodo is the flagship loudspeaker system from Gryphon, designed — like the company’s Apex amplifier — without regard to size, cost or complexity. It is a four-tower, part-active system built to remove the usual compromises from loudspeaker design, and it stands among the most complete statements Gryphon has made. For the listener who wants full-range reproduction with active room control, it sits at the very top of the range.
The Kodo comprises four gracefully curved enclosures per pair, each requiring some 110 hours of hand craftsmanship to complete. The cabinets carry all the hallmarks of fine Danish furniture, and detachable “Wings” allow an effectively unlimited range of finishes, so each pair can be tailored to its owner and room. Concave, curved front baffles time-align the drivers to the listening seat.
The system pairs prodigious dynamic range with control. Gryphon quotes 96dB sensitivity and a 4-ohm impedance, with bass extension to a subterranean 16Hz and a frequency response of 16Hz–25,000Hz, dependent on the chosen Q setting and the room. Because the bass is actively driven, the Kodo maintains its composure at any level while remaining an easy partner for a listener’s preferred amplifier above the bass region.
All 38 drivers are custom-designed and exclusive to the Kodo. Each bass tower uses eight 8-inch woofers driven by a dedicated 1000-watt (4000-watt peak) Gryphon-built Class-AB amplifier, giving linear output to the lowest frequencies. The upper towers array six 5.5-inch lower-midrange and four 4.5-inch upper-midrange drivers symmetrically around a German Air Motion Transformer tweeter, handling everything above 250Hz.
Active Q Control — a Gryphon exclusive — lets the Kodo’s bass be tailored to each room. Duelund Constant Phase crossover technology, based on the work of Danish mathematician Steen Duelund, keeps every driver in phase at all times, realised through custom crossover components and the time-aligned baffles. The bass modules use extensive internal bracing and natural-wool damping.
