Overview

The Maxima Amator is the two-way floorstanding model in Sonus Faber‘s Heritage Collection, the third member of a family that revives the brand’s early ideals of craftsmanship and natural sound. It realises the long-held ambition of a two-way floorstander in a solid-wood cabinet, combining traditional materials with modern acoustic engineering.

Design & build

The cabinet is built from solid walnut, finished with black leather, brass and Port Saint Laurent marble — materials chosen as much for their acoustic behaviour as their beauty. The interior is divided into three distinct chambers: the first optimises acoustic volume using a new damping material of two recycled-carbon-fibre layers around a silica-fibre core, while a further chamber provides stability and isolates the crossover.

Sound & performance

As a two-way vented design the Maxima Amator keeps its signal path simple, with a single crossover at 2100Hz between the tweeter and mid-woofer. Frequency response extends from 35Hz to 35kHz and sensitivity is 88dB, with a 4-ohm nominal impedance. The result is the intimate, coherent voicing associated with a well-executed two-way, allied to the scale of a floorstanding cabinet.

Key features

The driver complement is a 28mm H28 XTR-04 soft-dome tweeter with a high-power neodymium cup-design motor, and a 180mm MW18 XTR-04 mid-woofer. Recommended amplifier power is 25–125W for an undistorted signal. The two-way arrangement and single crossover point are central to the speaker’s directness and tonal purity.

Technology

Sonus Faber’s IFF crossover, a reimagining of the company’s Paracross topology, integrates the two drivers with attention to phase and time behaviour. The three-chamber cabinet manages internal air pressure and resonance, and the novel multi-layer damping material controls the main chamber, so the solid-wood enclosure contributes to the sound rather than colouring it.
