Overview
The PS3 is Gryphon’s MM/MC phono stage, an evolution of the company’s respected PS2 and PS2-S modules. It is a true balanced, dual-mono design conceived to draw the finest detail from both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, and can also be specified as the internal phono module for Gryphon’s Diablo 333 integrated amplifier.
Design & build
Built to Gryphon’s exacting standards and made in Denmark, the PS3 uses a true dual-mono topology — independent left and right channels for maximum separation. The signal path is discrete and fully balanced, with matched transistor arrays, and it accepts a balanced source through a gold-plated Neutrik XLR input.
Performance
The PS3 runs a true dual-mono Class A topology with no global negative feedback, an approach chosen for its purity and low distortion. Signal-to-noise is quoted at greater than 72dB in moving-coil mode (2.5mV input, 1kHz) and greater than 84dB in moving-magnet mode (250mV input, 1kHz), giving a quiet, detailed backdrop against which the music sits.
Key features
Support for both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, with 42dB gain for MM and 64dB for MC. Moving-coil load impedance is adjustable from 20 ohms to 1600 ohms in steps, set externally via left/right rear-panel switches so each channel can be matched precisely to the cartridge. Balanced XLR input on a gold-plated Neutrik socket.
Technology
The dual-mono Class A circuit dispenses with global feedback and uses matched transistor arrays for consistent channel behaviour. Low-noise regulated ±23V DC supplies feed the audio stages. External, per-channel MC loading lets the installer optimise cartridge matching without opening the unit — a practical benefit when dialling in a high-end turntable.
Specifications
Type: balanced dual-mono MM/MC phono stage. Gain: 42dB (MM), 64dB (MC). MM loading: 47kΩ // 220pF. MC loading: 20–1600 ohms in steps, set by rear-panel switches. Topology: true dual-mono Class A, no global negative feedback, discrete balanced with matched transistor arrays. Input: one balanced XLR (gold-plated Neutrik). Signal-to-noise: >72dB (MC), >84dB (MM). Power supply: regulated ±23V DC. Designed and built in Denmark.
Who it’s for
The PS3 suits the vinyl enthusiast building a high-end analogue system who values a balanced, dual-mono signal path and the flexibility to match a wide range of moving-coil cartridges precisely. It is equally at home as a standalone phono stage or integrated with a compatible Gryphon amplifier.
Why buy from Hidden Home Technology
A phono stage of this class rewards careful matching to the cartridge, tonearm and the rest of the system. We can advise on configuration and loading, demonstrate the PS3, and arrange delivery and setup across the South. Speak to our team to discuss your analogue front end at our Basingstoke showroom.
