The Marten Coltrane 3 is a flagship-tier floorstander with a pure-diamond tweeter, ceramic midrange and twin aluminium-sandwich woofers in a carbon-fibre cabinet — a first-order, time-coherent design of exceptional resolution.
The Coltrane 3 sits at the top of Marten’s Coltrane series, the Swedish maker’s statement of what a loudspeaker can be. It is a large three-way floorstander built around Accuton Cell drivers and a first-order crossover, combining a pure-diamond tweeter with a ceramic midrange and twin long-throw woofers for full-range scale with the resolution the Coltrane name is known for.
The cabinet uses high-gloss carbon-fibre side panels — a material Marten regards as ideal for loudspeaker enclosures for its strength and rigidity, producing a cabinet that is extremely inert and resonance-free across the whole frequency range. The construction is engineered to keep enclosure colouration out of the signal, letting the drivers work against a stable, quiet structure.
A first-order crossover gives, in Marten’s words, near-perfect time and phase coherence with flawless time coincidence — the drivers arrive together at the listener. Quoted frequency response is 20Hz–60kHz, ±2dB, with 88dB sensitivity and a 6-ohm nominal impedance (3.7 ohms minimum). The result is deep, articulate bass and an open, uncoloured midband with extended, natural treble.
The driver complement comprises a 1-inch pure-diamond tweeter, a 7-inch ceramic midrange and two 10-inch long-throw aluminium-sandwich woofers, all Accuton Cell units. Crossover points are 320Hz and 3.8kHz, first order throughout. The speaker is rated at 350W and stands 1220mm tall.
Accuton’s Cell Concept drivers use hard-membrane materials — diamond, ceramic and aluminium — chosen for their rigidity and low stored energy. The pure-diamond tweeter extends response to 60kHz with very low distortion, while the first-order crossover preserves phase relationships that higher-order networks cannot. Carbon-fibre cabinet panels complete a design focused on getting out of the drivers’ way.
