McIntosh C12000 2-Channel Solid State and Vacuum Tube Preamplifier (75th Anniversary)
£22,580.00
McIntosh’s reference two-channel preamplifier, built as a two-chassis, dual-mono design with a switchable tube or solid-state output stage and a fully balanced valve phono section.
Description
Description
Overview
The C12000 is McIntosh‘s reference stereo preamplifier, conceived as a no-compromise control centre for the finest two-channel systems. It is a genuine two-chassis design: the audio circuitry is housed in one enclosure and the control and power sections in another, linked by shielded umbilical cables, so the sensitive signal path is isolated from noise sources.
Design & build
Each module measures 17.5 × 6 × 18 inches, dressed in McIntosh’s classic black-glass front panel with blue meters, illuminated logos and machined aluminium handles. The controller weighs 27lb and the preamplifier module 25lb. Left and right channels are electrically and mechanically isolated in a true dual-mono arrangement, and the two-chassis approach keeps power supplies and control electronics well away from the audio stage.
Sound & performance
The C12000 offers a distinctive dual output philosophy: its high-level stage can be run through vacuum tubes or solid-state circuitry, selectable to taste. Total harmonic distortion is 0.005% at high level, with a 107dB signal-to-noise ratio and maximum output of 20V RMS balanced. The result is a very quiet, low-distortion foundation that lets the character of partnering equipment come through.
Key features
Connectivity is generous: six balanced and four unbalanced inputs, plus two phono inputs each configurable for moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridges. Outputs include two balanced variable outputs (one solid-state, one tube), a fixed unbalanced output and a programmable variable output. A high-drive headphone stage with McIntosh’s HXD crossfeed is provided, along with input level matching and home-theatre pass-through.
Technology
The high-level output uses six tubes — two 12AT7 and one 12AX7A per channel — while the phono stage runs four 12AX7A tubes in a fully balanced configuration. The phono section accepts moving-coil (0.25–2.5mV) and moving-magnet (5–10mV) cartridges with adjustable loading and gain. RS232 control and multiple power-control triggers allow clean integration into a wider system.

Who it’s for
The C12000 suits the listener assembling a reference two-channel system who wants the flexibility of both tube and solid-state voicing from one preamplifier, a serious valve phono stage for vinyl, and the isolation that only a separate-chassis design provides. It is a long-term centrepiece rather than a stepping stone.
