Pre-Amplifiers
The preamplifier is the control centre of a separates system. It selects sources, manages volume, and passes a clean, accurately balanced signal to the power amplifier. Its job is almost entirely negative: a great preamplifier adds nothing and takes nothing away.
That sounds modest, and it is why preamplifiers are so often under-budgeted. In practice the preamplifier sets the noise floor and the dynamic ceiling of everything downstream. A superb power amplifier fed by a mediocre line stage is a superb power amplifier faithfully reproducing a mediocre signal.
Our range runs from around £1,900 to £65,000. Here is how to choose.
The questions that actually decide it
How many sources, and of what kind? Count them honestly, including the television and anything you intend to add in the next few years. If a turntable is in that list, decide now whether you want a phono stage built in or separate.
Balanced or single-ended? If your power amplifier offers XLR inputs and the two boxes will sit more than a couple of metres apart, a balanced preamplifier is worth specifying. It is genuine noise-rejection engineering, not a marketing tier.
Do you want digital inputs built in? A preamplifier with a DAC inside removes a box and a cable. A separate DAC can be upgraded without replacing the preamplifier. Neither is wrong; decide which you value.
Volume control matters more than people expect. How a preamplifier attenuates — and whether it stays balanced and low-noise at the low volumes you actually listen at in the evening — is one of the clearest audible differences between tiers, and it is invisible on a specification sheet.
Gain matching. Preamplifier and power amplifier have to suit each other. Too much gain and all the usable range is in the first eighth of the dial, with hiss audible from the listening seat. We check this at specification stage.
Valve or solid state?
The preamplifier is where valves make the most audible difference relative to their cost and inconvenience, which is why so many otherwise solid-state systems have a valve line stage in them. It is a legitimate way to shape a system’s character deliberately. It is also a maintenance item. Choose it on purpose.
What we carry
McIntosh — the broadest choice, solid state and valve: the C49 around £7,190, the C55, the valve C8 and C22 Mk V, the C2800, and the hybrid C12000. The MP100 is the separate phono stage if you want vinyl handled outside the line stage.
Gryphon — Essence and Zena around £16,500, the Pandora, and the Commander at £65,000. Designed to partner Gryphon power amplifiers, and the natural choice if you are running them.
TAD — the C1000 around £19,500 and the reference C700.
Mola Mola — the Lupe around £7,299, the modular Makua, and the Tambaqui which combines reference DAC and preamplifier in one chassis.
Naim — the NSC222 streaming preamplifier around £5,167, and the Uniti Atom Headphone Edition for a system built around headphones.
