Overview

The MC1.25KW is McIntosh‘s most powerful single-chassis monoblock power amplifier, a statement design for reference two-channel systems that demand effortless headroom. It delivers 1,200 watts to a single channel while holding total harmonic distortion to just 0.005%, and it replaces the long-serving MC1.2KW at the top of the McIntosh amplifier range.

Design & build

This is a substantial component: 17.75 × 12.3 × 22 inches and 158lb, built on a polished stainless-steel chassis with McIntosh’s black-glass front panel. A large 11-inch blue Watt meter tracks output in real time. Gold-plated Solid Cinch speaker binding posts and both balanced and unbalanced inputs are provided, so the amplifier integrates cleanly with a wide range of preamplifiers.

Sound & performance

The MC1.25KW produces its full 1,200 watts into 2, 4 or 8 ohms — the same power regardless of load — with peak bursts beyond 2kW. A 50 per cent increase in filter capacity over its predecessor improves low-frequency performance and dynamic headroom. Signal-to-noise ratio is a very quiet 124dB balanced, giving the amplifier an iron grip on demanding loudspeakers.

Key features

Two of McIntosh’s defining technologies are central here. The Autoformer output transformer delivers the amplifier’s full rated power to any nominal impedance, while the Quad Balanced circuit runs the signal in balanced form throughout to cancel noise. Power Guard prevents clipping and the fuse-less Sentry Monitor protects the output stage, so the amplifier looks after itself and the speakers connected to it.

Technology

The Autoformer is McIntosh’s answer to the compromise between power and load: rather than losing output into lower impedances, it presents an ideal load so all 1,200 watts reach 2, 4 or 8-ohm speakers. Power Guard continuously monitors input and output waveforms to prevent audible clipping, and Sentry Monitor keeps the output devices within safe operating limits without fuses in the signal path.
