Description
The McIntosh MC255 5-Channel Power Amplifier is designed to deliver exceptional control, impact and clarity in high-performance home cinema systems. Engineered for demanding multi-channel environments, the MC255 combines high output power, low noise operation and advanced thermal management to ensure immersive cinematic performance without distraction.
The MC255 runs cool and silent, thanks to four McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks™ connected to advanced high-current output transistors. This design removes the need for cooling fans, eliminating mechanical noise that can interfere with movie soundtracks. A specially wound toroidal isolation power transformer further reduces noise, contributing to a clean and stable audio foundation.
Performance has been significantly enhanced compared to previous designs. Filter capacity has been increased by 50 percent, more than doubling dynamic headroom from 1.7dB to 3.6dB, a critical factor in reproducing the wide dynamic swings found in modern film soundtracks. When driving the front left, centre and right channels, output power increases to 250 watts per channel, while all five channels deliver a robust 200 watts per channel when used simultaneously.
Thanks to McIntosh Dynamic Power Manager® (DPM) technology, the MC255 delivers its full rated output into both 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers, regardless of channel configuration. This ensures consistent performance across a wide range of home cinema loudspeakers without compromise.
Visual feedback is provided by the distinctive TripleView™ power output meter, featuring three fast-responding pointers that display real-time performance. While visually striking, the blue meter illumination can be switched off for dedicated cinema rooms where screen focus is paramount. Traditional McIntosh control knobs manage power and meter lighting, while direct LED backlighting improves colour accuracy and long-term durability of the front panel.
System flexibility is another key strength. The MC255 can power a conventional 5-channel home theatre, integrate with additional McIntosh amplifiers such as the MI128 or MI254 for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D systems, or operate in a dual-zone configuration, with three channels delivering 250W in one zone and two channels delivering 200W in a second space.
Protection technologies are comprehensive. Power Guard® actively prevents clipping and potential speaker damage during demanding passages, while Sentry Monitor™ provides fuse-less short-circuit protection by disengaging the output stage if current exceeds safe limits, automatically resetting once conditions normalise. Both balanced and unbalanced inputs are included to ensure compatibility with a wide range of home cinema processors.
Finished in classic McIntosh style, the MC255 features a black glass front panel, TripleView meter, illuminated logo, aluminium end caps and a polished chassis, ensuring visual cohesion with other McIntosh electronics.
At Hidden Home Technology, we specify the McIntosh MC255 for clients seeking refined, high-output multi-channel amplification with absolute reliability and silence. Proper system design and installation are essential to unlocking its full cinematic potential.
