Overview

The Makua is the preamplifier from Dutch high-end specialist Mola Mola. Its designers set out to make electronics that are minimally invasive without being minimalist, so the Makua is complete rather than sparse: an exceptionally transparent gain stage and a fully programmable routing matrix, with a chassis sized to accept two significant optional modules. It is conceived to sit at the heart of a reference system and grow with it.

Design & build

The Makua wears Mola Mola’s distinctive industrial design, the casework precise and restrained. Inside, every stage uses discrete amplifier modules in a topology the company calls single-ended driven differential, which is chosen specifically to stop noise propagating through the signal path. The result is a preamplifier that is unusually immune to mains quality and cable choice.

Sound & performance

Volume is handled by a relay-based control that directly sets output-stage gain, giving greater dynamic range and linearity than a stepped attenuator, and operation that is smooth and glitch-free. Two optional modules extend the Makua. The DAC module mirrors the standalone Tambaqui converter, upsampling all incoming audio and using discrete mono DACs, with a Roon-ready Ethernet input alongside USB, Toslink, AES/EBU and Bluetooth, and support for high-resolution PCM and DSD. The phono module is an archival-grade stage with independent MM and MC paths, adjustable gain and loading and a comprehensive set of equalisation curves, all set from the Mola Mola app.
