Description
Description
Overview
The C8 is a vacuum-tube preamplifier from McIntosh, sharing the open-chassis industrial design of the marque’s MC275 amplifier and MA252 and MA352 integrateds. Paired with a power amplifier such as the matching MC830, a turntable or CD player and a pair of loudspeakers, it forms the analogue heart of a lifelike home system—with the option to add digital inputs when the time comes.
Design & build
Similar in size to the MA252, the C8 is powered by four 12AX7a vacuum tubes set in stylish protective cages atop a stainless-steel chassis polished to a mirror finish. A black glass front panel with silver trim, an illuminated logo, rotary controls and cast aluminium name badges give it the unmistakable McIntosh look—the tubes on show as part of the design.
Sound & performance
The C8 is voiced for the natural, dimensional presentation associated with a good tube preamplifier, while McIntosh’s engineering keeps it quiet and controlled. Bass and treble tone controls, with a bypass, allow the balance to be adjusted to the room and recording, and one of the unbalanced outputs can be configured to feed a powered subwoofer for extended low frequencies.
Key features
The C8 provides five analogue inputs: one balanced, two unbalanced, and separate moving-coil and moving-magnet phono inputs with adjustable loading for treasured vinyl. Outputs comprise one balanced and two unbalanced pairs, inputs can be given friendly names, and a High Drive headphone amplifier offers the power and flexibility to drive a wide range of headphones.
Technology
Although supplied without digital inputs, the C8 is digital-ready: the optional dealer-installed DA2 Digital Audio Module adds seven digital inputs—two coaxial, two optical, USB, an MCT input for McIntosh transports and an audio-only HDMI ARC connection—built around a Quad Balanced 8-channel 32-bit DAC supporting up to DSD512 and DXD 384kHz. Home Theater PassThru and Power Control ease integration into a wider system.
