Overview

The Amplitude16 puts sixteen amplifier channels into a single 2RU chassis, which is the whole point of it. A large immersive cinema can need twenty or more channels of amplification, and doing that with conventional amplifiers means a rack full of boxes, heat and mains distribution. This one box handles sixteen of them at 200W each into 8 ohms, and pairs can be bridged to 800W where a channel needs more. Trinnov writes it closed up as Amplitude16; UK dealers usually write Amplitude 16.

Design & build

A 2RU chassis of 482 x 132 x 452 mm including rack ears, weighing 20.5 kg — light for its output, because the Class D topology does not need the vast transformers a conventional amplifier would. It was designed with ICEpower to Trinnov’s own specification, combining their Class D modules with a custom dual power supply and advanced heat dissipation. There are two IEC mains inlets, and the amplifier is engineered to sit visually and technically alongside the Altitude processors. Warranty is five years and transferable.

Sound & performance

Each channel delivers 200W into 8 ohms and 400W into 4 ohms, measured at 1kHz below 0.1% distortion. Bridged, a channel pair gives 800W into 8 ohms or 1000W into 4 ohms. Total output is 3200W on a 230V supply with every channel driven, with peak power of 6080W. Frequency response is +0/-0.6 dB from 20Hz to 20kHz and is load-independent, distortion is 0.0015% and the signal-to-noise ratio is 126 dB A-weighted. The damping factor — a measure of how firmly the amplifier grips the loudspeaker cone — is 2340 at 100Hz.

Technology

Class D amplification has moved a long way from its reputation. The modules here were developed to Trinnov’s brief, and the measured results — 0.0015% distortion, a 126 dB signal-to-noise ratio — are numbers that used to demand far more weight and heat. Because efficiency is high, sixteen channels fit in two rack units without a cooling problem, which is what makes a twenty-channel cinema practical to house.

One thing to be clear about: the Dante network audio board is an option, not standard fitment. If audio over the network matters to your project, tell us at design stage and we will specify it, along with the processor that suits it.

Who it’s for

This is the amplifier for a large immersive layout where channel count, rack space and installation sanity all matter at once — a 9.1.6 or 11.1.8 room, or a system with several surround and height positions of similar sensitivity. It is also the natural partner for the AltitudeCI in a networked design. If you also have a few demanding full-range channels wanting the very best, look at the Amplitude8: the two are often used together, the Amplitude8 on the front three and the Amplitude16 on everything else.
