Ø Audio Ymir

Description

The Ymir is the Ø Audio flagship and the speaker the rest of the range is benchmarked against. Named after the primordial giant of Norse cosmology, it pairs Ø Audio’s full QVST horn-loaded waveguide with a 12-inch carbon-fibre composite driver in a triple-rear-ported cabinet — 120 kg per side, hand-built in Norway.

Horn and drivers

The Ø Audio QVST waveguide loads the top end. Below it sits a 12-inch carbon-fibre composite diaphragm driver with extended linear excursion — chosen for stiffness-to-mass rather than the conventional paper-and-pulp engineering of the lower-range woofers. The lower driver and the horn are crossed to preserve the horn’s dynamic advantage and the woofer’s authority across the transition.

Frequency response and efficiency

26 Hz – 22 kHz. 93.5 dB sensitivity. 8 Ω nominal, 8 Ω minimum. The Ymir is friendly to a wider range of amplification than its size and ambition might suggest — it will work convincingly on the right valve amplifier and scale cleanly to large solid-state on the same recording.

Cabinet

114.5 × 38.2 × 52.9 cm. 120 kg per cabinet. Triple rear ports — visible on the rear of the cabinet — provide the bass loading. Polished stainless-steel outrigger feet with tungsten resonance damping, the same engineering as the Verdande feet but scaled to suit the cabinet.

Finishes

Two standard finishes: Dark Walnut and Light Oak.

Why the Ymir matters

At its price point the Ymir competes with established flagship designs from larger and longer-established loudspeaker companies.
