Compact class AB monoblock power amplifier delivering more than 200W into 4 ohms, with XLR and RCA inputs and selectable 26dB or 18dB gain. Each PA1 drives one speaker, so a stereo system takes two.
The Grimm Audio PA1 is a class AB monoblock power amplifier that measures 25 cm square by 24 cm high and weighs 15 kg. Grimm quotes more than 200 W into 4 ohms from each one. The design is balanced throughout and uses no coupling capacitors. The linear power supply sets itself to the local mains voltage. Grimm says the circuit minimises dynamic signal distortions that many designs overlook. It also says the PA1 offers the musicality of the best valve designs and the rock-solid performance of the best solid-state ones. Industrial designer Michiel Uylings drew the cabinet. He also designed Grimm’s MU1 and PW1.
The PA1 has no volume control, so it needs a preamplifier ahead of it. For the PA1’s premiere at High End Vienna Grimm put its own Grimm Audio MU2 ahead of it and said the MU2 would “take the servant role and be the source and pre-amp for our PA1”. The MU2 is a streamer, DAC and preamplifier in one box. An MU2 and two PA1s give you source, preamplifier and power amplification from one design house. The PA1 takes XLR or RCA and has a switch for 26 dB or 18 dB of gain. Grimm’s manual says 26 dB suits most preamplifiers. It suggests 18 dB for a preamplifier with a very high output or for high-sensitivity speakers.
Daniel Crick heard the PA1 monoblocks at High End Vienna in June 2026. They were playing through a prototype pair of Grimm passive speakers. He said the sound was “so effortless, open and detailed without ever being fatiguing” and that “joyful is perhaps the best word I can think of to describe the sound I heard”.
