The Co-Star is a Kaleidescape upgrade kit that brings 4K Ultra HD to an existing Premiere (M-Class) system. It pairs a Premiere server with a Strato 4K player and, through a compact HDMI switch, lets the two operate as a single video source — so an established Kaleidescape system can play the latest 4K HDR titles alongside its existing library without being replaced.
The heart of the kit is a small HDMI switch, described by Kaleidescape as not much larger than a deck of playing cards, which installs discreetly in a rack or cabinet. The kit is supplied complete, including two high-quality HDMI cables tested to pass an 18Gbps signal, so the connection between the players and the display meets the demands of 4K HDR.
With the Co-Star in place, a Strato player and a Premiere system function together seamlessly, playing DVDs, Blu-ray discs and all digital movies up to 4K HDR from what appears to the user as one source. The Premiere system keeps its existing ability to import content from disc, so nothing is lost in gaining 4K playback.
The Co-Star switch provides two HDMI 2.0a inputs and one output, with HDCP 2.2, and is supplied with two 1.5-metre HDMI cables verified to pass 18Gbps. It gives full access to Kaleidescape Movie Store content, including 4K Ultra HD titles, and integrates with control systems such as Crestron, as well as video processors such as Lumagen, within a wider installation.
The switch combines the outputs of the Strato and Premiere players and passes 4K HDR at up to 18Gbps — the bandwidth 4K HDR requires — to a single display input. Kaleidescape recommends that the HDMI path from switch to display is verified to carry an 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 signal, ensuring reliable 4K HDR delivery across the installation.
