Overview

The Terra 30TB is the larger of Kaleidescape’s compact movie servers — the storage heart of a serious Kaleidescape system. It holds a substantial film library downloaded at full reference quality from the Kaleidescape Movie Store, and serves it to the Strato players around your home with none of the compromises of streaming.

Design & build

The compact chassis measures just 20.0 × 3.9 × 36.4cm and weighs 3.3kg, built around one integrated high-capacity hard disk drive. It shares its enclosure with the 8TB model, and an optional rack shelf mounts one or two units in a single 1U rack space — discreet enough for a cabinet, tidy enough for a plant room.

Capacity & performance

Thirty terabytes stores approximately 495 standard 4K titles — Kaleidescape’s high-bitrate downloads run to around 16.5 films per terabyte — with lossless audio and full HDR picture data intact. A feature-length 4K film downloads in around ten minutes on a suitably fast connection, and downloads continue while the system plays.

Key features

The Terra 30TB serves up to five Strato players simultaneously, so five rooms can watch five different films from the same library at the same moment. Movies purchased from the Kaleidescape Movie Store download directly to the server, and the collection is browsed through Kaleidescape’s celebrated on-screen interface on any connected player.

Technology

Connection is a single Gigabit Ethernet port — the server sits on the network and the Strato players find it. Kaleidescape masters every title itself for minimal compression, preserving full colour depth, shadow detail and lossless soundtracks, which is why a Kaleidescape download outperforms the same film streamed.
