The Insight Series P4i is an in-wall point-source loudspeaker from Wisdom Audio, a specialist in planar-magnetic architectural speakers. It combines Wisdom’s thin-film planar driver with multiple woofers to deliver high-resolution, full-bandwidth sound that disappears into the wall — suited to both serious two-channel music and home cinema.
The P4i is designed to install flush into the wall (or ceiling) and be finished to disappear behind a grille, with the option of custom-length grilles to suit the room. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally, and measures 31.61 × 5.52 × 3.43 inches (H × W × D), keeping intrusion into the wall cavity to a minimum.
The P4i combines a planar-magnetic thin-film driver with four 3 × 5-inch woofers for low distortion and wide dynamic range. Quoted frequency response is 80Hz–20kHz, with 6-ohm impedance, 86dB sensitivity (2.83V/1m) and a maximum output of 109dB at one metre — a clean, detailed and dynamic performance from a flush-mounted enclosure.
The thin-film planar driver is the heart of the design: an ultra-light membrane that responds instantly to fine detail and has far less inertia than a conventional cone or dome. Four woofers handle the lower registers, and the P4i uses an internal passive crossover (crossover frequency 650Hz), requiring one channel of amplification per speaker.
Planar-magnetic thin-film drivers move air with a large, light diaphragm rather than a small piston, which Wisdom cites for exceptional clarity and freedom from the blurring associated with heavier drivers. Their large radiating area also lends an effortless, open quality that suits both full-range music and the demands of a cinema soundtrack.
