Why we install Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Floor Standing Loudspeakers
The 703 S3 is a very useful loudspeaker for the sort of rooms we are most often asked to design: a serious music space that still has to live comfortably in the home, or the front left and right channels of a refined media room. It has enough authority to feel grown-up without demanding the space, budget or amplification commitment of the larger models in the range, which makes it a strong choice for Georgian rooms, open-plan living areas and dedicated cinema rooms where the front three are carefully matched. In a typical Hidden Home Technology system we would pair it with a compatible 700 Series centre speaker for film use, discreet surrounds or in-ceiling effects where appropriate, and a properly integrated subwoofer rather than asking the main speakers to do every job. Setup matters: the 703 S3 rewards careful positioning, sensible toe-in, solid amplification and room correction that is checked by ear, not simply accepted from an app. Bass management is especially important in multi-purpose rooms, where furniture, fireplaces and glazing can all affect the result. Compared with the slimmer 704 S3, the 703 S3 is the one we tend to choose when the room can take a little more presence and the client wants greater ease at realistic listening levels; the 702 S3 is the step up when scale and budget both allow. Visit the Hidden Home Technology showroom in Bath to hear where the 703 S3 sits in the range before deciding.
The new 703 S3 now features our iconic Tweeter-on-Top configuration for the first time, alongside a decoupled FST™ Continuum cone midrange driver – enhanced by the addition of our revolutionary new Biomimetic Suspension – and twin Aerofoil Profile bass drivers.
Room-filling realism
Its new Tweeter-on-Top configuration and the revolutionary Biomimetic Suspension in its decoupled midrange drive unit combine to raise the 703 S3 to all-new heights of performance.
A house for high frequencies
The 700 Series features the latest generation of our iconic Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing. Its new, more elongated form incorporates a longer tube-loading system to produce an even more free and open sound with high frequencies. The carefully decoupled housing is milled from a single solid block of aluminium to better resist resonance.
Sharper detail
Carbon Dome tweeters are purpose-built for the 700 Series. Delivering a dramatic improvement on the aluminium double dome tweeter, they raise the breakup threshold to 47kHz, for pinpoint imaging accuracy and detail.
Truly amazing sound
Thanks to its composite construction, the Continuum™ cone avoids the abrupt transitions in behaviour that can impair the performance of a conventional drive unit. The result is a more open, neutral performance that delivers voices and instruments with precision and transparency.
Clean and clear
Every three-way loudspeaker in the new 700 Series has a dedicated midrange cone using four key Bowers & Wilkins technologies: the Continuum cone, FST™, Biomimetic Suspension and midrange decoupling, the latter ensuring minimal interference from the operation of the loudspeaker’s bass drivers.
A triumph of science
Developed using advanced computer modelling techniques, the Aerofoil™ Profile bass cone has variable thickness, providing stiffness and rigidity where it’s needed most. The result: deep and dynamic bass.
