Grimm Audio Subwoofer – SB1 Motion Feedback Subwoofer
From £6,120.00
An active subwoofer that applies Digital Motional Feedback to a high-performance aluminium woofer, cutting bass distortion dramatically for control and transparency across the whole low-frequency band.
Description
Description
Overview
The SB1 is an active subwoofer from Grimm Audio built around Digital Motional Feedback, a control technology that measures and corrects the woofer’s movement in real time. Added to the LS1 system it extends low-frequency reach while lowering distortion across the full audio band, and a dedicated switch lets it serve third-party systems too—so its virtues are not confined to Grimm Audio owners.
Design & build
The cabinet is a sealed enclosure of multi-layered, CNC-machined MDF, with no port or passive radiator to add resonance or delay. The woofer fires upward, an orientation chosen to minimise energy transfer into the main loudspeaker’s supports. It is a compact, purposeful design in which every element serves the goal of accurate, low-distortion bass.
Sound & performance
Below 100Hz, conventional drivers move a great deal of air and their fundamental resonance introduces delayed, unwanted energy—the familiar thickening of bass. The SB1 attacks this directly: by applying feedback to the moving cone it reduces the already low distortion of its aluminium woofer by as much as 30dB, resolving the resonance and control problems that ordinarily compromise the bottom end.
Key features
The SB1 is a natural partner for the LS1 and an excellent match for the LS1be, and a smart extension even for the LS1a. Integrated with an LS1 it forms a phase-corrected three-way with a crossover at 70Hz. The standalone switch, DSP-controlled response curve and IEC pass-through for powering the main speaker make it flexible and tidy in use.
Technology
Digital Motional Feedback mounts an acceleration sensor on the aluminium cone, sampling its motion tens of thousands of times a second and feeding a high-speed digital correction loop. Combined with current-drive amplification and smart DSP processing, the loop holds the cone to its intended path with a precision Grimm Audio regards as unique to the SB1—bass control of a different order.
Specifications
Type: active subwoofer with Digital Motional Feedback. Woofer: 10-inch aluminium, upward-firing, motion-sensed. Enclosure: sealed, multi-layer CNC-machined MDF (no port). Distortion reduction: up to 30dB via DMF. Extension: to 20Hz. Integration: phase-corrected 70Hz crossover with the LS1 system; standalone switch for third-party use; IEC pass-through.
Who it’s for
The SB1 is for the listener who treats bass as a matter of accuracy rather than volume—whether completing a Grimm Audio system or bringing motional-feedback control to another high-end setup. It rewards rooms and systems transparent enough to hear the difference.
