The LS1s is a pair of stereo subwoofers from Grimm Audio, designed as a precise extension to the company’s LS1 and LS1a active loudspeakers. The phase-corrected crossover is already built into the LS1, so adding the subs does not bolt a separate box onto the system—it completes it, turning the LS1 into a single, phase-coherent three-way with genuine low-frequency reach.
Because wavelengths at low frequencies are so long that driver orientation ceases to matter, Grimm Audio was able to mount each LS1s facing upward, fitting elegantly between the legs of an LS1 stand. The subwoofer can also be lifted off the footplate and placed independently, so the bass can be optimised for the room even where that is not the ideal spot for the main loudspeakers.
On its own the LS1 reaches down to around 40Hz with real power, but the bottom octave to 20Hz is difficult for any two-way to produce. The LS1s supplies exactly that, so classical material in particular gains a properly balanced foundation. For professionals monitoring at raised levels, the pair also lowers overall system distortion.
The crossover to the subwoofers sits at 70Hz and is handled within the LS1’s own digital signal processing, which manages filtering and phase correction so the transition is seamless. The stereo pairing preserves left-right low-frequency information rather than summing it to mono, in keeping with Grimm Audio’s phase-linear approach.
Each LS1s uses a 10-inch Peerless woofer chosen to match the immaculate standard of the LS1, driven by a Class D amplifier of Hypex design. Combined with the LS1’s DSP crossover and phase correction, the result is a three-way system that stays time-aligned and controlled to 20Hz—bass that is defined by its precision rather than its quantity.
