Description
Overview
The LS1v2 is the active loudspeaker system from Grimm Audio, a Dutch company whose watchword is accuracy: reproducing a recording exactly, adding nothing and losing nothing. Widely used as a mastering and mixing monitor, it is equally at home in a high-end domestic system for listeners who want the truth of a recording rather than a flattering version of it.
Design & build
The LS1v2 uses a compact 14-litre sealed box that is deliberately much wider than it is deep, providing an effective baffle down to around 250Hz. The cabinet is suspended between two half-cylinders that reduce edge diffraction and double as an integral two-legged floor stand, so the speaker’s own support is part of its acoustic design.
Sound & performance
Being fully active and DSP-corrected, the LS1v2 is linearised down to 35Hz with a phase-correct response, which gives it an unusually neutral and revealing character. It reproduces a musical recording faithfully while exposing any imperfection, providing all the information needed to judge a mix — the qualities that make it a trusted studio tool as well as an honest domestic monitor.
Key features
Each LS1v2 carries a 1-inch dome tweeter and an 8-inch magnesium woofer, driven by two 180-watt Class D amplifiers of the Hypex NCore type. The electronics — DSP, converters and amplification — are housed within one of the two support legs, so the system needs no external amplifier. A DSP-controlled, filtered analogue subwoofer output allows the system to be extended.
Technology
The LS1v2’s crossover is an IIR design with fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley acoustic slopes crossing at 1550Hz, with an inverted all-pass filter applied to restore linear phase. A 48-bit DSP engine handles the crossover, driver linearisation and phase correction, and the system uses the same master-clock circuit as Grimm’s CC1 clock — a reflection of the company’s roots in professional digital audio.
