The small Bluesound

The Bluesound PULSE FLEX is the smallest speaker in the current Bluesound range and the replacement for the PULSE FLEX 2i. One 102mm woofer, one 21mm tweeter, 50W of Smart DSP amplification and the full BluOS streaming platform. It sits on a shelf, a worktop or a bedside table, or goes on the wall with the optional WM100 bracket.

What’s inside

A 4-inch (102mm) woofer and a 0.75-inch (21mm) tweeter, driven by a Smart DSP amplifier rated at 50W total system power: 40W to the woofer, 10W to the tweeter. On its own it is a mono speaker; pair two in the BluOS app for stereo. Hi-res playback runs to 24-bit/192kHz with DSD256 support, on a quad-core 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A53 processor.

Wall, shelf or stand

Bluesound make two optional mounts for the PULSE FLEX, both sold separately: the WM100 wall-mount bracket and the FS230 adjustable floor stand. The wall bracket is the one to plan for in a kitchen, hallway or utility room where worktop space is spoken for. One change from the old FLEX 2i: there is no battery option. Bluesound’s BP100 battery pack does not fit this model, so it is a mains-powered speaker.

Inputs and connections

Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi 5. Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX HD (receive). A 3.5mm combined optical/analogue input for a TV or another source, USB-C for a computer, and a USB-A port for a stick or drive of music (FAT32 or NTFS) which the speaker can also share to other BluOS players in local server mode. Wireless subwoofer output to a PULSE SUB+. Front IR sensor with learning, so an existing remote can drive it.

Stereo pairs and surround duty

Pair two PULSE FLEX for stereo. Or use a pair as wireless rear channels behind a PULSE CINEMA, PULSE CINEMA MINI, POWERNODE or POWERNODE EDGE system.

BluOS streaming

The same BluOS platform as every other Bluesound product: 23+ music services and internet radio in the BluOS Controller app, plus AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect and Roon Ready. Amazon Alexa skills for voice control. Drivers for Control4, Crestron, RTI, Nice, URC and Lutron control systems. Three preset buttons and simple push-button controls on the top panel.

Where it fits

The PULSE FLEX is the least expensive way into a BluOS system and the right size for a bedroom, study, kitchen or en-suite. Where a single speaker has to fill a larger room, step up to the PULSE M, PULSE MINI or PULSE. Three finishes: Black/Charcoal, White/Pebble Grey and White/Tan, each with a removable fabric grille. Why we recommend it
