Overview

The Sonetto III is the most compact floorstanding model in Sonus Faber‘s second-generation (G2) Sonetto collection. A slim 2.5-way design, it combines a genuinely small footprint with the commanding presence of a larger speaker, thanks to the technologies developed for the range in the Sonus Faber DesignLab in Italy. It is one of the most room-friendly true floorstanders among current loudspeakers at its level.

Design & build

The cabinet keeps the marque’s iconic lute-shaped form, in high-quality wood with leather accents, and adds a new concrete base for improved structural integrity and easier installation. It is offered in high-gloss black, wenge and walnut. Despite its slender proportions the Sonetto III is built to Sonus Faber’s usual standard of finish, so it works as an object in the room as much as a loudspeaker.

Sound & performance

As a 2.5-way floorstander the Sonetto III uses its drivers to give scale and reach beyond what its dimensions suggest. Quoted frequency response is 38Hz–40kHz with a sensitivity of 88dB, and Phase Coherent Crossover technology synchronises the drivers’ phase behaviour for a coherent, natural presentation—the slim cabinet belying the weight and composure on offer.

Key features

The driver complement pairs a 1.1-inch DAD Arrow Point extended-frequency tweeter, with a copper shorting ring, and two 6.5-inch drivers—a mid-woofer and a woofer—each with aluminium demodulation rings and the collection’s new flower-pattern suspension. The mid-woofer sits in a rear-vented enclosure and the woofer in a down-vented one, a G2-era arrangement that helps the small cabinet load the room evenly.

Technology

The DAD (Damped Apex Dome) Arrow Point tweeter uses its copper shorting ring to lower distortion at high frequencies, while the flower-pattern suspension and aluminium demodulation rings on the mid-woofer and woofer are drawn from the second-generation engineering of the wider range. Together with the Phase Coherent Crossover they reflect the trickle-down of Sonus Faber’s higher-model technology into the Sonetto line.
