Overview

The Sonetto V is the larger floorstanding model in Sonus Faber’s second-generation (G2) Sonetto range. A three-way design, it carries engineering inspired by the flagship Suprema into a more attainable loudspeaker, aimed at listeners who want genuine scale and bass authority alongside the natural, musical voicing for which Sonus Faber is known.

Design & build

Hand-finished in Italy, the cabinet follows Sonus Faber’s signature lute-shaped form, which helps control internal resonances. It is offered in three finishes — Walnut, Wenge and Black Gloss — with real-wood veneers on the wood options. Bass loading is by a reflex port vented through the base of the cabinet onto its plinth.

Sound & performance

As a three-way floorstander the Sonetto V separates the frequency range across dedicated drivers, giving an open, uncoloured midband and weighty, controlled low end. Quoted frequency response is 35Hz–40kHz, with the larger cabinet and twin woofers delivering the scale and authority that smaller models in the range cannot.

The driver complement comprises a 1.1-inch DAD “Arrow Point” tweeter, a 6.5-inch Camelia midrange and two 6.5-inch woofers. Sensitivity is 89dB with a 4-ohm nominal impedance, and the speaker is rated for amplifiers of 50–320W — comfortable with a wide range of quality amplification.

Technology

The DAD (Damped Apex Dome) Arrow Point tweeter uses a copper shorting ring for low distortion at high frequencies. The natural-fibre Camelia midrange — shared with the larger models in the range — is housed in a sealed internal chamber for a clean, well-isolated midband. Together these reflect the trickle-down of technology from the Suprema project into the Sonetto line.

The wider view: Sonus faber Sonetto V G2 reviews in brief

The Sonetto V G2 is a three-way floorstander from the second generation of Sonus faber’s Sonetto range. It is the most affordable stereo model in that range to use the new Camelia midrange, a flower-shaped paper cone that until now was found only in the company’s flagship Suprema. Two 165 mm bass drivers sit below it and a 28 mm tweeter above, and the port fires down onto a concrete plinth. It stands almost 109 cm tall in walnut, wenge or gloss black.

Ketan Bharadia gave it four stars for What Hi-Fi? in April 2025 and found it an easy speaker to like. He heard a sound that was “articulate and detailed, particularly through the midrange”, with the muscle to take Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight without strain. The bass reached deep and hit hard, and the testers tired of high volume before the speakers did.

Tom Martin reviewed it for The Absolute Sound in September 2024 and singled out its soundstage. On good recordings the music seemed to happen in a real space, wide and deep and often well above the cabinets. He praised its way with the smallest details, which gave instruments their natural tone, and he found it kind to older recordings.

Both reviews say who it will not suit. What Hi-Fi? wanted more rhythmic drive and found that the wrong electronics could make it sound aggressive and edgy, so it needs smooth and refined partners with real current for its 4 ohm load. Tom Martin found the ported bass rich and a little blurred, and he would send anyone who lives for bombast and drive elsewhere.

It suits a medium to large room and a listener who values a believable stage and natural tone above sheer attack. The downward port lets it sit as close as 30 cm to the wall behind, though What Hi-Fi? got the best from it about a metre into the room with a little toe-in.
