Overview

The MA9500 is the flagship two-channel integrated amplifier from McIntosh, the Binghamton, New York maker whose blue meters and glass fascias are among the most recognisable in audio. It gathers a genuine reference-grade power section, a comprehensive analogue preamplifier and McIntosh’s upgradeable DA2 digital module into a single chassis, so an entire high-end system can run from one integrated amplifier without compromise.

Design & build

The MA9500 wears the full McIntosh dress code: a black glass front panel with fibre-optic LED lighting, illuminated logo, machined knobs and a pair of blue peak-responding watt meters. The chassis is substantial, with monogrammed heatsinks and gold-plated Solid Cinch speaker binding posts, and at 101 lb it has the mass its output stage demands. It measures 17.5 × 9.44 × 19.75 inches (W × H × D).

Sound & performance

The MA9500 delivers 300 watts per channel into two, four or eight ohms via the appropriate Autoformer output taps. Power Guard monitors the signal to help prevent clipping, and the fuse-less Sentry Monitor protects the output stage. Speaker impedance, sensitivity, listening distance and required levels still need to be considered when matching the system.

Key features

The preamplifier is unusually complete. Ten analogue inputs are provided — two balanced, six unbalanced and, notably, both a moving-coil and a moving-magnet phono input, each with adjustable loading. An 8-band analogue equaliser allows ±12dB of tailoring across the range, and a High Drive headphone stage with Headphone Crossfeed Director is built in. Home Theater PassThru lets the amplifier sit within a surround system.

Technology

Digital duties fall to the DA2 module, an 8-channel, 32-bit/384kHz Quad Balanced converter. It carries two coaxial and two optical inputs to 24-bit/192kHz, a USB input handling PCM to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD up to DSD512 and DXD, an MCT connection for McIntosh transports and an HDMI ARC input for a television. Because the module is a plug-in card, the digital section can be updated in future without replacing the amplifier.

Who it’s for

The MA9500 suits the listener who wants one statement component to run a complete two-channel system — digital sources, a turntable and demanding loudspeakers — without a rack of separates. It is equally at home as the heart of a serious hi-fi or, thanks to the passthrough, folded into a wider AV installation.

What we would pair it with

Speaker matching is still a model-specific decision. Options worth assessing include Bowers & Wilkins 803 D4, 802 D4 and Sonus Faber Olympica Nova III; audition the proposed combination and check its suitability for your room. For digital music, an Innuos source can feed the DA2 module through a compatible digital connection. Room and setup notes

At 101 lb this is a two-person lift and it needs a shelf rated for it — a glass or lightly-built rack is not adequate. It runs warm under load, so allow real clearance above and behind; a sealed cabinet will shorten its life. In a large or dedicated room we would specify a radial mains circuit for it at first fix. The 8-band analogue equaliser is genuinely useful in a room you cannot treat, but it is a last resort, not a substitute for placement — we would rather set the speakers up properly first and use the equaliser to catch what is left.

Also worth considering

If the room or the speakers do not justify 300 watts, the MA8950 covers most of the same ground for less. If you want the last increment and the valve midrange, the hybrid MA12000 sits above it. HHT buying advice: McIntosh without a valve stage

The MA9500 is solid-state, with 300 watts per channel into two, four or eight ohms via the appropriate Autoformer taps. DA2 digital inputs, MM/MC phono and eight-band tone controls provide a broad source hub. Do not assume that every McIntosh integrated uses valves or shares the same listening character.

The MA9500 is a solid-state integrated amplifier from McIntosh that makes 300 watts a channel through the company’s autoformers, so the power holds into 8, 4 or 2 ohms. It weighs nearly 46 kg. Inside are a DAC on a plug-in card that can be updated later, an HDMI input for a television and phono stages for both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges. The eight equaliser controls on the front let you shape the sound to the room.

Terry Ellis reviewed it for Pursuit Perfect System in February 2023 and gave it the site’s Special Performer award, its highest. He had expected a warm and soft sound. Instead he found it clean, fast and close to neutral, and its vocals carried “a little bit of sweetness” that he liked. With a pair of revealing speakers he heard a see-through sound and a deep, layered stage. He liked the built-in phono stage enough to want to sit and play records all day.

He did find the bass graceful rather than punchy, though the equaliser let him enrich it. The built-in DAC was very good to his ears but a dedicated converter bettered it, and the volume display was hard to read from his chair.

It is at its best with large or demanding speakers in a room that can use the power. It also suits a listener who wants one box for records, digital sources and the television.
