Steinway Lyngdorf was born in 2007, when Steinway & Sons — makers of the world’s most celebrated pianos — joined forces with the Danish digital-audio pioneer Peter Lyngdorf. The ambition was singular: complete music and cinema systems engineered end to end by one company, to a standard worthy of the Steinway name.At the centre of the range sit the P-series surround processors, crowned by the flagship P300 — sixteen native channels of Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D decoding with HDMI 2.1 video. What makes them unlike any other processor is the architecture around them: the signal path is fully digital from source to speaker terminal. The P300 hands digital audio to Steinway Lyngdorf’s own amplification over dedicated Digital Link connections, and the company describes its amplifiers as digital-to-analogue converters with sufficient power to drive loudspeakers directly — a single conversion, made at the last possible moment, with volume controlled losslessly in the power supply rather than by circuitry in the signal path.Every Steinway Lyngdorf system is calibrated with RoomPerfect, the room-correction technology developed by Peter Lyngdorf’s team in 2006. RoomPerfect first measures the loudspeaker from the listening position, then maps the whole room in three dimensions; it separates the speaker’s own character from the room’s errors and corrects only the room — so you hear the loudspeaker as its designers intended, not a processor’s idea of it. The entire guided process runs on the processor itself in around twenty minutes.The result is a complete ecosystem — processors, amplifiers and the Model-series loudspeakers, engineered as one instrument, with each speaker’s characteristics programmed into the processor. For clients who want a system conceived as a whole rather than assembled from parts, there is no real equivalent.
