Sonos is to multi-room music what Hoover became to vacuum cleaning: a brand name that quietly took over the category, until people use it as the noun. “We’ll put Sonos in the kitchen” has become shorthand for multi-room music, even before anyone has chosen the actual system.

That household-name status was earned. Sonos helped define the modern wireless music system: one app, every room, very little fuss. For homes that want music to follow them through the house without ever opening a manual, it’s still the easiest thing to recommend. From Era speakers to Beam Gen 2 and Arc Ultra soundbars, Sub models and the Sonos Amp, the products are competent in their own right, well-built, and settle into a system that is genuinely set-and-forget.
