Gryphon’s Mephisto Solo monoblock power amplifier: a pure dual-mono design that parallels two channels for double the current and half the distortion, with massive Holmgren transformers and no output relays, built in Denmark for the most demanding loudspeakers.
The Mephisto Solo is the single-channel monoblock power amplifier from Gryphon, created for the most demanding systems. Rather than bridge an existing stereo amplifier — which doubles distortion and impairs low-impedance drive — the Mephisto Solo runs two stereo channels in parallel, giving unchanged output and voltage but double the current and half the distortion. It sits alongside the Apex near the top of Gryphon’s amplification range.
Housing each channel in its own independent enclosure, with separate power supplies, rectifiers, regulation and gain stages, eliminates interaction between channels and any possibility of inter-channel crosstalk. The Mephisto Solo is a substantial amplifier at 108kg net per unit, and its monoblock form also allows flexible placement close to the loudspeakers in the listening room.
The amplifier is rated at 200W into 8 ohms, rising to 1600W into 1 ohm, with THD+N below 1% at full power and A-weighted noise under -83dBV. Its extreme current capability lets it hold the dynamic integrity of the signal under the most reactive loudspeaker loads, and its performance is level-independent — equally composed from background levels to full output.
Each Mephisto Solo uses two custom Holmgren toroidal transformers with internal magnetic shielding, 80 very-high-current bipolar output transistors and a 1,000,000µF capacitor bank, with the output coupled by massive copper busbars. Crucially, there are no output relays: their removal yields an extraordinarily low output impedance of under 0.013 ohms and avoids the signal degradation that high-current relays introduce.
The Mephisto Solo is designed with zero global negative feedback, yet achieves a bandwidth of 0.3Hz–400kHz, to meet the dynamic demands of the finest sources. A fully regulated, filtered power supply removes mains noise and voltage spikes without limiting current, improving focus, transient attack and soundstage depth. As ever with Gryphon, what is left out — the relays, the feedback — matters as much as what is included.
