Overview
The M2500MK2 is the stereo power amplifier in TAD‘s core range — the company founded as Technical Audio Devices, whose reputation was built on professional studio monitors before it turned that engineering towards domestic systems. It is a Class D design, which in this case is not a compromise for cost or size but a deliberate route to very high power with low distortion and modest heat.
Design & build
TAD’s stated goal here is symmetry. Left and right channels are separated completely from input to output, with their own power supplies and transformers, and separation is carried through to the positive and negative rails. The output stage is a bridged transformer-less design running two amplifiers in a balanced configuration per channel, which is how it arrives at 500 watts per channel. A high-capacity toroidal power supply feeds the analogue sections.
Sound & performance
What that architecture buys, in a room, is control. The character of the M2500MK2 is speed and grip rather than warmth — leading edges arrive cleanly and stop cleanly, and the bottom end stays defined at volumes where many amplifiers begin to soften. It is a revealing amplifier: it will show you what your source and preamplifier are doing, for better and for worse.
Who it’s for
The listener who wants reference-level power and does not want a Class A amplifier’s heat, weight and electricity bill. It is also the sensible answer where the amplifier has to live in a rack or a cabinet, or in a room where a large Class A design would be genuinely uncomfortable in summer. If your preference is for the softer, more romantic presentation of a valve or Class A design, this is not that amplifier and we would point you elsewhere rather than try to talk you into it.
What we would pair it with
Most naturally with TAD’s own loudspeakers — the Evolution One TX, Compact Evolution One TX or the reference Reference One TX — with the TAD C1000 or C700 preamplifier ahead of it and the DA1000TX converter as the digital source. Outside TAD, it suits loudspeakers that reward control rather than needing warmth added: Bowers & Wilkins 802 D4, or Marten.
Room and setup notes
Class D means it runs far cooler than a comparable Class A amplifier, which makes it one of the few genuinely reference-grade power amplifiers we are comfortable specifying into a cabinet — though it still wants airflow, and we would still not seal it in. Balanced XLR between preamplifier and amplifier is the right choice here given the fully balanced internal architecture. As with any amplifier at this level, a dedicated mains radial is worth specifying at first fix if the room is being built.
Also worth considering
