The LS1be is Grimm Audio’s flagship active loudspeaker — a fully engineered system in which drivers, amplification and digital signal processing are designed together and calibrated as one. Grimm come from professional mastering, and the LS1be reflects that heritage: a monitor built for accuracy that has found a natural home in high-end domestic listening. It is an active design, so no separate power amplifier is required.

Design & build

The cabinet is offered in a Hi-Macs solid-surface finish or in bamboo veneer, giving a clean, understated presence that suits a considered interior. Each pair is individually calibrated during production, so the response you hear is measured and corrected rather than assumed. As a system the LS1be is intended to be complete in itself, with optional matching components for those who wish to extend it.

Sound & performance

At the heart of the LS1be is a new beryllium tweeter, co-developed with Seas, which extends the frequency range with roughly 9dB less distortion than Grimm’s original tweeter. The result is a clean, wide-dispersion top end with well-behaved off-axis response, so the speaker remains even and unfatiguing across a room rather than only at a single seat.

Key features

The LS1be is driven by very low distortion NCore Class D power amplifiers and its frequency curve is linearised through DSP, applied during a computer-aided calibration process. Both digital and analogue inputs are provided, and volume and source can be controlled remotely. The dispersion is unidirectional down to 250Hz, aiding a stable, focused stereo image.

Technology

Because the LS1be is DSP-controlled end to end, correction is applied in the digital domain before amplification. A USB interface supports high-resolution playback, including 64/128 fs DSD and DXD. For deeper bass extension the system can be paired with Grimm’s SB1 subwoofer, which uses digital motional feedback for markedly lower distortion, fed from the LS1be’s filtered analogue subwoofer output.
